  • I Think I Can- I think I Can...

"As your body is what you eat , your spirit is what you think."

I was outside planting cabbage the other day and began contemplating how many cabbage heads the plants would eventually  produce and wondering what I would do with all of that cabbage.

"And so love your true brothers as your Heavenly Father , and your Earthly Mother love them .It is  by love that the Heavenly Father , Earthly Mother and Son of Man  become one"

Our local food bank distributes food in the park 3 times a week for those in need. It is mostly canned items and so I thought something fresh from the garden would be a real treat , so Lord willing , I would share the extra cabbage with them even though it would probably not even be enough to go around , maybe 10 heads or so.

"Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, Teach a man to fish and feed him for life"

The same rule applies to growing vegetables.

And Your earthly Mother and Heavenly Father will send you their angels , to teach , to love and to serve you ...

I have never been  sure exactly where my place in the universe is but I am pretty sure it is somewhere  in a garden.

"And their angels will write the commandments of God in your head in your heart and in your hands , that you may know , feel and do , Gods commandments."

I thought about the possibility of a community garden and even with only 50 gardeners we could grow 510 exextra heads of cabbage ! The idea just seemed to fit.

"Brick walls only stop those who are not really determined to achieve their dreams."

There are a few minor details I need to work on , like the fact I have no location for the project , no capital for the start up , no experience with a community garden or other project, no friends in high places , bad credit  ,

    Photobucket

I guess you could say I am not really "bonefide "so community support takes some effort .The lack of confidence some seem to have in my ability to succeed is due somewhat  to the fact  no one else wants to take a risk untill they see some other business owners  in the community contribute.

"Those who say it can't be done , please quit interrupting the one doing it"

    Photobucket

It is easy to quickly become over whelmed and give up the idea completly. Many times in the past , I have failed to achieve a dream , mostly because I was either afraid to try ,  gave up prematurely  , let someone  convince me I couldnt or was simply unwilling to put in the work.

This time I am trying a little experiment , a challenge to myself so to speak. I will create the community garden in San Marcos , from scratch , starting with no resources  . If plan A fails Ill just go on to plan B.

I will prove one person can make a difference . and anything is possible if you believe it is.

So.. .I have a seminar this weekend in Austin  about the startup and success of community gardens . I will get to meet some folks who have been at it for a while and get some ideas of where to start . They have a variety of start up resources and ideas  and ways to contine a successful community garden that have been proven .

"For if you understand and and feel the commandments , then all for which you pray to your Heavenly Father and Earthly Mother will be given to you.

That's a great idea. When we were in a house, I used to imagine carrying around extra bags of veggies from my garden for the homeless.

I've never had any luck with cabbage. What's your secret?

  • ultravioletrobin

@distractedbyzombies - Cabbage likes the cooler weather.  Not sure if I have a secret though - I just get lucky sometimes . I have not been able to grow corn.

1 in every 4 children and 1 in every 5 adults in south central Tx are hungry or not food secure. The solution to that is to supply our own

@ultravioletrobin - Corn is a tough one, too. Luckily, even the tiny ears taste good. That's all I've ever managed.

We never had cool weather when we were in North Texas. Just hot and cold. Probably why I couldn't grow cabbage!

I love this song, btw. One of my top five TP songs.

I love your posts by the way, they are always challenging a so beautifully said.

Some homeless and single room occupancy (S.R.O.'s) in the Heartside Neighborhood (actually the poorest ghetto in the city) started a community garden complete with the "if you don't help you don't eat policy" to make sure everyone was blessed evenly.

With a little help from people working with and among them it has been going on for 10 years now.

It also has tripled in size and has a lot of resident workers each doing what they can.

It's really cool, I'm really glad you thought of starting one to help make food available to the impoverished.

    Thank You

@onesmilingdog - I took a basket full of bell pepper and tomatoes to the food bank the other day and out of the 75 folks i spoke with only 1 person was interested - a little discouraging that some would rather spend an hour 3 times a wek holding out a box for a hand out than spend 3 hours a week becoming self sufficient. Anyway maybe the idea will grow - I havent given up yet.
